I went to college there from 1992 to 1994. Hartlepool was rough as fk then, Middlesbrough even worse! It was quite scary walking the streets. The people were rather backward, unfriendly, very small minded and culturally Hartlepool was way behind other cities at that time. If you were 'different' you were not welcome. You had to be white, aggressive and heterosexual and love to beat people up in order to fit in otherwise you'd get your head kicked in.
